FAVOURITE AUTHORS 4: J.D. SALINGER

J.D. Salinger's writing is a gift to the world. Being the embodiment of precision, his prose flows. It's so easy to read you forget you're reading at all. It's as if you were told a story. Your eyes move along the lines but you don't notice. You hunger for the next chapter, line, word...

'The Catcher in the Rye,' Salinger's most famous novel, reads like this - effortlessly. Without spoiling it, I can only say that it follows a boy's adventures and emotional struggles on his way to adulthood - not an appealing description for a legendary novel. What makes this Bildungsroman stand out from hundreds of others then? The way it's written. Its immediacy. The crude but precise dialogue that makes each conversation realistic. The contrasts between the strong to-the-point diction and fast-paced narrative, and the subtlety of the climax. The complexity of characterisation that makes characters unforgettable.

Salinger's life mirrors his tireless perfectionism. His work ethic is enviable. Apparently, he was a loner who had a special office where he would write, edit, make story-boards, etc., and not see anyone for weeks. He would also not let a story be seen, let alone published, if there was so much as a word out of place. This made him run into conflicts with his publishers, and editors, including newspaper editors, who took the liberty of crossing out, or replacing, particular words in his writings. He was devoted to his work. His work has influenced millions including writers such as John Updike, or Philip Roth. His writing is a gift that keeps on giving.
