While everyone tells you to read as much as possible, I will actually tell you the opposite. I have been thinking about it, and I've come to the conclusion that too much information might be confusing and overwhelming.
I know that if you see a book written by a particular author you admire, it may be very tempting to just start reading, because you feel flattered by the fact that someone with all the experience that you don't have has taken the time to share it with you. It is also understandable that if you are a curious intelligent person and the world seems a fascinating place with so much substance to it that you know nothing about, you would, on first youthful impulse, want to explore it. However, if, in fact, all you want to do in life is publish good fiction (poetry and novels in my case), you should, in fact, sit calmly at home, not take in more knowledge, but simply work on your similes, assonance and alliteration.
