To write well, you need to read. A lot. And...
To write excellent works, you need to read excellent writers.
This is how the idea for this series was born. I'll be sharing with you my favourite authors along with the reasons why you can benefit from reading their work.
I want to start with a contemporary author because I feel like Shakespeare and Milton get a little too much attention these days. (Not without reason though! There are going to be blogs about them too). In contrast to the literature of the Renaissance, for example, contemporary literature cannot call itself 'timeless' yet. It simply doesn't have the momentum. Several generations haven't had the privilege of looking at it in awe.
But contemporary authors, such as Alain de Botton, a Swiss-born British author, show the application of yesterday's verse to today's reality. They take advantage of their standpoint in time and push the art forward by blending disciplines. In my personal favourite, 'How Proust Can Change Your Life,' de Botton analyses Marcel Proust's, a French writer's, work in search of lessons that Proust embedded in his writings. The book focuses on nine key areas of life. There is talk of love, successful suffering, and the art of putting books down... amongst others. It can also be seen as a type of manual to living a fuller life emotionally, with oneself and within society, because today's literature, enriched by the lessons drawn from centuries of progress, can act as a guide, something to orient ourselves by, in this changing world.
Among Alain de Botton's bestselling books, there are 'The Consolations of Philosophy,' and 'The Art of Travel.' He is also the author of 'Religion for Atheists.' You can probably already see the range of topics and domains he is interested in. His knowledge on each subject is impressive and his style delights which makes disciplines such as philosophy, or theology more accessible to the public. Another reason to pick up one of his books... You will not be disappointed!
