GUIDE TO WRITING AMAZING POETRY, VOL.II

1. FIND YOUR STYLE

Once you've read a lot and it's time to write, you may firstly find yourself imitating your favourite writers. It's because their style is the only style you're familiar with. And, it's actually good. It's just a stage in your development as a writer and I don't know anyone who hasn't gone through it. If you see it happen, or your friends, teachers, or editors (anyone who reads your work) tell you about it, don't let it intimidate you. Write more. In fact, write as much as you can. Gradually, themes will emerge from your writing and you will see what you're comfortable writing about. This will flow from within. If you stick to these themes, a way of speaking about them will come naturally, because you will need to describe your way of seeing. You will thus develop a distinct style.

2. TRY OUT DIFFERENT FORMS

There are three schools of thought when it comes to form. Some think that sonnets and limericks belong in the past, others maintain that meaning should shape form, so if your song of illicit love would gain by being bound in the rigid structure of the sonnet, you should employ that form, and finally, there are those convinced that your style will dictate your form, and it will probably be just one form. Personally, I tend to agree with the last group. I feel that to find the form, or forms, that suit your style best, you need to try out all of them. However, there is no right, or wrong here, just as many rights and wrongs as there are poets.

3. NOTICE AND NOTE

It's all about sparks. You don't need a muse, and a brilliant thought may strike you on a bus, and not on top of the clichéd Kilimanjaro while you're gazing at an insignificant village below that is veiled in mist... No. You will probably be standing behind the bar looking at the flow of beer knocking at the bottom of an empty glass when a realisation hits you. Note it down! So many times, I've been walking down the street, seen something beautiful, real, and raw, and I forgot all about it because I didn't note it down. Carry a notepad, note it on your phone, your arm... I don't mind as long as you remember the spark.
