IDEA IS KEY
If you go back to the reason(s) why you write, is it because you feel like it is the most pleasurable activity? Does it help you develop in some way? Is it because by writing, you can deal with feelings and experiences you may not be able to deal with otherwise? These are all valid reasons.
For me, however, the ideas that I wanted to convey have always been the impulses for my best writing.
The process is important. You need to think about the structure and the means of expression to present your thoughts in a concise way, so you don't confuse the reader and lose your point in the midst of words. But the thought behind the writing, the central image, or idea, is the most important part of the story.
I have a friend who would research for an essay and once they've established their stand on any given topic, they would start writing by writing the conclusion. They would then explain how their research supported their findings in the body, and outline the sources and general debates in the introduction. In other words, the idea gave them a structure for the writing.
I say, start with an idea. If you have something you think is worth sharing with others, the writing will come!
