EDITING

Some say that writing is rewriting. I think editing is a much subtler art. It is rethinking. It does not necessarily consist of crossing out whole paragraphs, or starting from scratch. But, it does require you to go back to the key concept your writing was meant to express. Ask yourself one question on rereading your work. Does the writing itself carry my meaning? To assess yourself, you need to be honest with yourself. Greatness starts with admitting faults.

If you feel that the text is good but somehow the central image, or idea, is overshadowed by heavy style, or the introduction of different characters, and leaves you unsatisified, or confused, here are some additional questions you may want to consider. 1. Are my comparisons separate ideas, or images, themselves? (Too many images cause confusion and detract attention from the central one) 2. How much detail do I go into describing the main image compared to the supporting images? 3. Are any of my metaphors and symbols purely decorative, or do they all build, or support, the meaning?

And always remember, greatness takes time to develop!
