PASSION. PRICELESS.

We spend more than half of our lives working. Most of us work to be able to support ourselves and our families. Some get a little pleasure out of it, but very few can afford to fuel their work with passion. Can you imagine what it must be like to run on passion though?

Noel Coward (also known as the workaholic of the literature world) was once asked what he did for pleasure. He replied: 'work is more fun than fun'. I heard this first when I was very little and laughed so hard I got hiccups... A few years later, I started writing. Now, I know what he meant. Once you discover your passion, you feel privileged to follow it. Yes, it's hard at times especially when your passion lies in a creative field because. chances are, you won't succeed financially (only at first, hopefully), your first manuscripts, or paintings, will get rejected, and you will get to walk the walk of shame back to the workplace.

There are internal and external pressures that can cause you much anxiety, but true passion always triumphs. Even if you cannot do what you love in exchange for money, or you've tried and failed, you can always continue doing it in your own time. Practise makes perfect, so with enough determination, there may come a time when you feel confident enough to try sharing your work with the world again. Say you are passionate about writing like I am. That feeling that you need to write will make you think of ways of carving out hours from your busiest days that you can devote to it. It won't let you stop. Even if you doubt yourself. Even if no one listens to you. This fiery feeling inside will make you come back to the table again and again and again, because as everyone who has listened to Mr Keating will know, 'medicine, law, business, engineering, these are all noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.' Fuel your work with passion and you will never work again.
