"Write for yourself"
Let me explain. If you start out with the expectation of creating the next masterpiece of the century, your first draft may (just may) fall short. You've read great literature and expect it of yourself to write great literature, but what actually happens is that you compare everything you write to what you've read which may discourage you from picking a pen up ever again. Believe me, I've been there...
However, everything changes once you let yourself start with the thought that no one has to ever see your writing if it's mad, sad and bad. The pressure of expectation dies, and it's just you, your twisted mind, pen and paper. Suddenly, you don't have to please anybody, not even yourself. You are not judged, you are free to do anything. In a safe environment like this, chances are that you are going to write a lot more, and a lot better. And in the end, this may convince you to consider sharing your work with other people, or even publishing it!
Starting out by telling myself that I'm writing for myself and what comes out is between me and myself has brought out the best in me. Time it brings out the best in you!
