I've been writing for many years... for as long as I can remember, actually. First, I doodled, and it gave me immense satisfaction to complete something on paper, and preferably show it to everyone around for an additional self-esteem boost... Maybe you've done this too. But, since I'm no longer five, what I write makes a lot more sense (hopefully), and I don't always need to scream once I'm done (not that it wouldn't be fun, or liberating). I do however get a sense of satisfaction when I complete a project, polish a poem, or even write a blog. Now, it's not because of my ego's need for recognition but rather its absence. I cherish the opportunity of giving, sharing with other people my skills, observations, and thoughts. Writing is an act of giving. Ironically, when you give you receive. Therefore, writing is also an act of getting. To communicate your ideas effectively, you need to work on your skills, and the larger the desire to give, the more you exercise, and the better writer you are.
Another reason why I write is a tiny bit more selfish. It's because it helps exorcise my demons, and it can help you too. The act of writing is in itself purifying. You pour your thoughts onto the paper. Someone could say that you paint a picture with your words. You may use your fears, negative, or scary experiences, or observations to do this. Whether you are an amateur, or a professional writer, you certainly have some dark thoughts, annoying people, or situations, on your mind from time to time. Creatively channelling this energy generated by overthinking can relieve anxiety. Additionally, if you don't describe your life in detail, but rather let it be an inspiration for a poem, or story, which may of course still contain some elements of your experience, you may have some great material in your hands.
Sometimes, when there is an anxious feeling looming over me and you cannot quite pin down the reasons for it, I also write. I use the stream of consciousness which is a technique where you allow your hand to write quicker than your thoughts run. You write long, short, truncated sentences and words that, for some unknown reason, come up in your mind. And by 'unknown reason,' I mean are generated by your subconsciousness (at least, in theory). There is only one rule: no judgement. Rereading the scribblings usually points me toward the reason for my anxiety. There may be some repeated words, or images that show you where the problem lies.
Apart from these, quite personal, reasons for writing, there is always the possibility of leaving something behind. If you are more serious about the craft, you have probably already thought about the implications of being published. This way, you contribute a verse to history. Even if your body eventually decomposes, your thoughts are immortalised. You may help someone from the next generation understand an aspect of life, or human nature, better. You may be an inspiration for someone to start writing because they will admire your style, or precision, or any other quality. You can help bring the age you live in closer to thoughts who will only be able to get closer to it from books.
There are so many reasons for writing, but one certain common denominator - growth.
Writing makes you become a better author, communicator, and person. You become your best self as you probe your own consciousness in search of answers to your own (and maybe all our) problems.
